USA Field Hockey Shutout Canada in

STANFORD, Calif. The USA women's
field hockey team scored a shutout win over Canada for the second consecutive day with a
3-0 victory at Stanford Univ.
The USA added the exhibition victory to
a 1-0 win on Wednesday as part of a four-game series with their neighboring rivals.
April Fronzoni, Kelli Gannon and Mimi
Smith scored the goals for the USA and goalkeeper Kelly Baril notched the shutout as the
team raised its California tour record to 7-0. The team swept Ireland in a five-game
series at Stanford last week.
The series marks the team's final
domestic preparations for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, March 18-28 in Auckland, New
Zealand. The USA will enter the Qualifier as the world's number 10th ranked
team and must among the top five teams at the 10-team Olympic Qualifier to advance to the
2004 Olympic Games. USA coach Beth Anders will use the tour to make her final evaluations
before selecting the18-member team that will represent the USA at the qualifying
tournament.
The series with Canada continues with official FIH contests Jan. 23 and
24. All games are scheduled for 2 p.m.
The team will then leave for Australia
in mid-February to continue its preparations for the March qualifier.
