USA Field Hockey Top Canada 1-0 in Series Opener

STANFORD, Calif. – Kristen McCann scored a field goal in the game’s sixth minute and goalkeeper Peggy Storrar registered the shutout as the USA national field hockey team defeated Canada, 1-0 in an exhibition game at Stanford Univ.

The game marks the first contest of a four game series with Canada as the USA continues its preparations for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, March 18-28 in Auckland, New Zealand. The USA will enter the Qualifier as the world's number 10th ranked team and must among the top five teams at the 10-team Olympic Qualifier to advance to the 2004 Olympic Games.

The Canada series follows the USA team’s five game sweep of Ireland at Stanford as USA coach Beth Anders continues her evaluation of the squad for the final selection of the 18-member team to represent the USA at the qualifying tournament.

McCann connected on her second goal of the tour early in the contest and Storrar made the score standup for the remainder of the game in collecting her fourth shutout of the selection tour.

The series with Canada continues with an exhibition game on Jan. 22 followed by FIH official contests on Jan. 23 and 24. All games are scheduled for 2 p.m.

The team will then leave for Australia in mid-February to continue its preparations for the March qualifier.
