USA Field Hockey Men Breeze Past Brazil in Pan Am Cup Opener

LONDON, Ontario – Shawn Nakamura (Camarillo, Calif.) scored four goals as the USA Field Hockey men breezed past Brazil, 10-1, in the team's opener of the 2nd Pan American Cup.

Nakamura was joined in the scoring column by Ian Scally (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), Jarred Martin (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Ramandeep Sandhu (Camarillo, Calif.), Jang Badhesha (Santa Clara, Calif.) and Pat Harris (Moorpark, Calif.) in the tournament's opening day win.

The winner of the tournament earns the continent's automatic berth in the 2006 World Cup in Mönchengladbach, Germany.

After a tentative start, Scally finally opened the scoring for the USA with a field goal in the 20th minute. Harris and Sandhu quickly followed with a pair of goals in a one-minute span to give the USA a 3-0 lead.

Brazil cut the lead to 3-1 on a penalty stroke by Oliver Hack before Nakamura added a stroke at the endof the first half to give the USA a 4-1 halftime lead.

The USA continued its domination in the second half as Nakamura added three more goals to secure the win for the USA.

The USA resumes tournament play against Puerto Rico on Thursday. Puerto Rico suffered a 10-0 loss to Chile in its opening day game.
