USA Field Hockey U21 Teams to Compete in Chile Tournament

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Field Hockey’s men’s and women’s Under-21 teams will look to prepare for next year’s Pan American Junior Championships when the two teams compete in international tournaments, Dec. 14-19 in Santiago, Chile.

The USA women will compete in a four nation tournament with Argentina, Canada and host Chile, while the USA men will see action in a three nation event featuring Argentina and Chile. The USA will see these same countries as part of 12-team fields at the Pan Am Junior championship in early 2005.  The men’s Pan Am event is scheduled for February 16-27 in Havana, Cuba while the women’s tournament is scheduled for March 16-27 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The top three teams from each of the Pan Am tournaments are expected to qualify for the Junior World Cup tournaments in 2005. The men’s Junior World Cup is scheduled for July in Rotterdam, The Netherlands while the women’s Junior World Cup is slated for September in Santiago.

“This will be a great tour for the juniors as we prepare for next year's Jr. Pan Ams,” said USA women’s junior national team coach Tracey Fuchs.  "All of the teams we will see in San Juan will be participating in the Jr. Pan Ams, so we'll get a taste for the competition early. This will be the first international competition for many of these players, and we want to expose them to many teams and different styles before the World Cup next September."

Likewise, men’s coach Shiv Jagday will be looking to gain international exposure for his young team.

“These teams (Argentina and Chile) will be among the top teams at the Junior Pan Ams,” said Jagday. “This is an opportunity to see some good competition and to see where we are and what we need to work on in preparation for the Pan Am event.”

The Argentina and Chile men placed 1-2 at the last Junior Pan Am championships in 2000 while the U.S. men narrowly missed a spot in the Junior World Cup with a fourth place finish. Argentina has won all seven previous Junior Pan Am tournaments. The USA men’s best finishes have been fourth place showings in 1981, 1985, 1992 and 2000.

The U.S. team includes Amrit Ahluwalia (Irvine, Calif.), Emmad Farooqui (Canoga Park, Calif.), Zachary Freundlich (Wayland, Mass.), Jonathon Ginolfi (Moorpark, Calif.), Patrick Harris (Moorpark, Calif.), Sean Harris (Moorpark, Calif.),  Daniel Jordan (Camarillo, Calif.), Richard Jordan (Camarillo, Calif.), Jacob Mahan (Camarillo, Calif.), Malachi Mahan (Camarillo, Calif.), Chris Niles, Austin Pile (Fort Collins, Colo.), Jeb Saez (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), Jacob Schlosser (Moorpark, Calif.), Ryan Sherburne (Greenfield, Mass.) and Andrew Zayac (Columbia, Md.).

Pat Harris and Saez competed as members of the 2000 U.S. Junior Pan Am team and also competed for the USA senior national team at the 2003 Pan American Games. In addition to Saez and Harris, Sean Harris, Malachi Mahan and Daniel Jordan are also members of the 2004 U.S. senior national team.

On the women’s side, the four-team event in Santiago features the four teams that swept the top four spots at the last Pan Am Junior championship in 2000. Argentina won the gold medal, while the USA took the silver medal and Canada defeated Chile for the bronze medal. Argentina has won each of the four previous Pan Am junior events while the USA placed second in 1988 and 2000.

The USA squad for the Santiago event includes Katerine Blair (Louisville, Ky./Virginia), Lauren Crandall (Doyelstown, Pa./Wake Forest), Rachel Dawson (Berlin, N.J./North Carolina), Katelyn Falgowski (Landenberg, Pa./St. Marks HS), Katie Grant (Lehighton, Pa./Duke), Michelle Kasold (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill HS), Cara-Lynn Lopresti (San Diego, Calif./Duke), Kristen Madden (Concord, N.H./Boston College), Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon HS), Lauren Powley (Montaintop, Pa./Maryland), Elzabeth Schlossberg (Chevy Chase, Md./Univ.
