USA Field Hockey Junior Women Blank Canada for third place; Argentina tops Junior men

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The USA Field Hockey junior women's team earned a third place finish at the Chile Four Nation Tournament with a 3-0 blanking of Canada while the U.S junior men completed their tournament with a 6-0 loss to tourney champ Argentina.

In shutting out Canada, the U.S. earned its first victory of the tournament after beginning the event with a late 3-2 loss to Chile and then a disappointing 1-1 draw with Canada in pool play. The team saw second half leads evaporate in both games.

But in the final game, head coach Tracey Fuch's team would not let another lead slip away. High school All-America selection Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa., Wissahickon HS) put the U.s. on top with a field goal in teh 16th minute and Rachel Dawson (Berlin, N.J./Univ.  of North hCarolina) and Laura Suchoski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) added second half goals o give the U.S. the victory and a third place finish. Goalkeepers Katherine Blair (Louisville, Ky./Univ. of Virginia) and Elizabeth Schlossberg (Chevy Chase, Md./Univ. of Pennsylvania) shared the shutout for the U.S.

The tournament served as a warm-up for the U.S. junior women in their preparations for the Junior pan American Championships, March 16-27 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The top three teams from the event are expected to qualify for the Junior World Cup  in 2005 in Santiago.

In the men's tournament, Argentina continued its dominance of the event with the shutout of the U.S. squad to conclude play in the double-round-robin men's event. Argentina outscored the U.S. and Chile, 32-3 on its way to the tournament championship and will be the favorite to defend its title at the Junior Pan American Championships, Feb. 16-27 in Havana. Like t he women's Pan Am event, the top three teams from the tournament are expected to qualify for the Junior World Cup in 2005 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
