USA Field Hockey Junior Men’s, Women’s Teams Fall to Argentina

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The junior men’s and women’s teams from Argentina handed the young U.S. field hockey squads a double set back as the pre-tournament favorites scored victories over the USA in their respective tournaments in Santiago.

The Argentina women defeated the USA junior team, 5-2, while the Argentina men topped the U.S. under-21 men, 8-1. With the loss the U.S. women fall to 0-2-1 in the four nation tournament that also includes Chile and Canada. The USA men drop to 0-2 in a three-nation, double round-robin event with Argentina and Chile.

After giving up a quick goal in the second minute of play, the young U.S. team played the favored Argentines even before tying the game in the final minute of the half.  Lauren Crandall’s (Doyelstown, Pa./Wake Forest Univ.) goal gave the U.S. a short-lived draw, however Argentina answered immediately and connected on a penalty corner in the final seconds of the half to take a 2-1 halftime lead.

Katie Grant (Lehighton, Pa./Duke Univ.) tied the game with her third goal of the tournament early in the second half, but Argentina took the lead for the final time two minutes later. Argentina added two additional goals at the end of the game to clinch the top seed in the crossover round with a perfect 3-0 record.

The USA will meet Argentina again on Saturday in the tournament semifinal while second seeded Canada will meet third-seeded Chile in the other semifinal.

On the men’s side, Argentina scored five first half goals to coast to the victory and a 2-0 mark in the three-team tourney. Argentina defeated Chile 12-0 earlier in the tournament.

The USA meet will take on Chile in the second round of the double round-robin series on Friday.
