USA Field Hockey Junior Women Draw with Canada

Colorado Springs, Colo. – The USA Field Hockey Junior Women’s team earned its first points of the Chile Four Nation Tournament with a 1-1 draw with Canada in Santiago.

The draw followed a 3-2 loss to Chile in the opening game of the tournament.

The USA posted the game’s first goal on the scoreboard when Katie Grant (Lehighton, Pa./Duke Univ.) connected on a penalty corner to give the U.S. at 1-0 halftime lead. The goal was Grant’s second score of the tournament.

But for the second consecutive game, the young U.S. team saw a second half lead disappear as Canada’s Jessica Denys scored on a penalty corner with five minutes remaining in the game as the USA settled for the 1-1 draw.

The U.S. women continue play in the four nation tournament on Thursday against  Argentina.  After a day off on Wednesday, the USA junior men’s team (0-1) is scheduled to resume play on Thursday against Argentina. The U.S. lost to Chile, 1-0 in the opener of the men’s Three Nation Tournament.

The tournaments serve as a warm-up for next year’s Pan American Junior Champions. The Pan Am events will determine the continental qualifiers for the 2005 Junior World Cups.
