USA Field Hockey Junior Teams Fall to
Chile in Tournament Openers
Colorado Springs,
Colo. –
Chile’s Junior National Teams welcomed the U.S. Field Hockey men’s and
women’s junior national squads with a pair of losses as the host team
defeated the USA in the opening games of their respective tournaments in
Santiago.
Chile edged the USA junior women 3-2, while the Chilean men topped the
USA juniors, 1-0.
After falling behind
1-0 on a penalty stroke, the USA women stormed back with goals by Katie
Grant (Lehighton, Pa./Duke Univ.) and Dana Sensenig (Denver, Pa./Old
Dominion Univ.) to take a 2-1 halftime lead. Chile battled back in the
second half however to tie the game in the 49th minute before
netting the game-winner with 13 minutes left in the game.
The U.S. women
continue play in the four nation tournament on Wednesday against Canada.
Canada dropped a 4-0 decision to Argentina in its tournament opener.
On the men’s side,
Chile scored the game’s only goal in the 14th minute and held
on for the victory. The three-nation tournament also includes Argentina.
The tournaments serve
as a warm-up for next year’s Pan American Junior Champions which will
determine which teams qualify for the 2005 Junior World Cups.
