USA Field Hockey National Indoor Tournament Crowns Champions in Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach, Va. – Indoor field hockey teams from Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey captured top honors at the USA Field Hockey National Indoor Tournament at the Virginia Beach Pavilion.

Hometown team Beach Premier Ripcurls of Virginia Beach earned the Pool F championship following a 2-0 win over High Styx Stampede (Pa.) in the final game of pool play. The victory gave the Ripcurls the pool title by virtue of the head-to-head tie-breaker.

“It’s wonderful,” said Ripcurls coach Tara Worley on the local team’s victory. “We have a good group of girls who have been here before, and they worked really hard. To come here (to the National Tournament) and see all of the kids and the exposure they get, it’s just really exciting for the kids and the sport. You can’t help but love it.”

Three teams from Pennsylvania earned tournament titles including Pottstown’s Xcalibur Freedom (Pool A), New Wales’ Mystx Storm (Pool B) and Hershey’s Storm Trooper Sandstorm (Pool C). Xcalibur and Storm Trooper gave their clubs their second indoor titles in as many years and were the only clubs to repeat as champions in 2004.

Two teams from New Hampshire took home titles including Greenland’s Re-United (Pool D) and East Kingston’s Seacoast United Gold (Pool G). New Jersey’s Spirit Eagles North of Southampton and Maryland’s Capitol Pegasus Hoyas of Bethesda rounded out the pool championships with gold medals in pools F and H.

“It’s always good competition here,” said Xcalibur coach Amy Ott. “It’s fun because you get to come down here and play against the best of the best. The players are phenomenal and they’re all good teams. It’s just a matter of who can put it together at the right time, and we were able to do that. I’m just really proud of them.”

The first of three national indoor tournaments this spring, the event featured 64 teams from 10 states competing in the under-19 age group. Additional national tournaments are scheduled for the women’s open division, March 20-21 in Collegeville, Pa. and in the under-14 and under-16 age groups, April 2-4, in Loudonville, N.Y.
