USA Field Hockey to Host Inaugural Club
Cup in Virginia Beach
Colorado Springs, Colo. The
nations top field hockey clubs will battle for national honors, April 24-25, as USA
Field Hockey hosts the inaugural USA Club Cup at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach.
Representing the pinnacle of success at the club level in the United States, the tournament features
six mens and eight womens squads of regional representatives selected to
compete in the first year of the elite event.
The mens tournament includes 2002-03 Northeast Field Hockey Association and 2003 JFK
Memorial Tournament champion Tri-State Falcons, 2003 Atlanta Cup champion Mavericks (Washington, D.C.), Minutemen FHC (Boston), LA Tigers (Southern Calif.), Hotlanta (Georgia) and
Early Bird FH (Colorado).
The mens field
features a collection of current and former USA national team players including current
USA players Rinku Bhamber, Shawn Nakamura, David Schmoyer, Pat Cota, Ian Scally, Shawn Hindy, Gurpal Kundi, Mandeep
Bhui, Jarred Martin and Chris Terrebonne of the LA Tigers and Nate Coolidge of Minutemen
FHC. The event also showcases some of the USAs top young talent
with USA junior national team
players Zack Freundlich and Chris Pothier of Minutemen and Spencer Wagner and Austin Pile
of Early Bird Field Hockey.
On the women's side, the Washington
Shredders captured the 2003 Big Apple Tournament championship and will be joined in the
title hunt by New England champion Minutewomen (Boston), 2003 National Hockey Festival
third place finisher Third Degree (Pa.) and Northeast Field Hockey Assoc. champs Big Apple
Flickers (N.Y.). The tournament also includes California representative Monarcas,
Philadelphia Bears, Atlanta Peaches and Lady Mavericks (Washington, D.C.).
In addition to top collegiate
talent, the womens rosters include Olympians Donna Chung (1988) and Leslie Milne
(1980, 1984) of the Minutewomen. The tournament also features a return to the Virginia Beach turf by former Old Dominion
all-America selection Adrienne Yoder (Philadelphia Bears ), recent USA national team member Rachel Barger
(Third Degree) and local high school coach Kristin Wheeler (Atlanta Peaches) of Cape Henry
Collegiate.
The trophy for the women's
tournament will be presented in honor of the late Jodi Johnson, a long-time coach and
friend of field hockey who died in September following a battle with cancer.
The tournament kicks off at 7 a.m. Saturday and runs throughout the
day. Action resumes on Sunday at 9 a.m. and concludes with final games at 3 p.m. There is no charge for admission.
