Jill Reeve will make her third appearance in the Pan Am Games after winning silver medals in 1995 and 1999

US Field Hockey Names Women’s Pan American Games Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – U.S. Field Hockey has announced the 16-member team to represent the United States at the XIV Pan American Games, Aug. 2-13, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Selections to the team are subject to approval by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).

Selected following residency training sessions and recent international competitions, the U.S. team features five players returning from the 1999 Pan Am games including five-time U.S. selection, Tracey Fuchs.  Playing in every Pan Am tournament since women’s field hockey was first added to the Games’ programme in 1987, Fuchs will join Kate Barber ('99), Katie Beach ('99), Jill Reeve ('95, ‘99) and goalkeeper Peggy Storrar (’99) in making return trips to the Games.

The team also includes 2002 World Cup team members Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif.), Tara Jelley (Greenfield, Mass.), Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.), Tracey Larson (Morrisville, Pa.), Carrie Lingo (Rehobath Beach, Del.) and Kristen McCann (Allentown, Pa.). Also selected to the team, Robyn Kenney (Readington, N.J.) and goalkeeper Amy Tran (Grantville, Pa.) were members of the U.S. team that beat India in the World Cup qualifying series.

The U.S. selections also feature some of the newest members of the team including Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J.), Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) and Abbey Woolley (Ocean City, N.J.). Coleman joined the team’s residency program following team trials in February, while Rizzo and Woolley were selected to the team following Open Trials in August, 2002.

Natalie Dawson (Berlin, N.J.) and Mimi Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) were named as alternates to the Pan Am team.

The U.S. team will get its final tune-up for the Pan American Games during the FIH Champions Challenge, July 5-13 in Catania, Italy.

The winner of the Pan American Games tournament earns the automatic continental berth into the 10-team field at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Reigning world champion Argentina has won the gold medal in each of the four previous Pan American Games women's tournaments, with the U.S. earning silver medals in 1987, '95 and ’99, and a bronze medal in 1991.

The U.S. will begin the Pan Am tournament in Pool B with Canada, Jamaica and Uruguay, while Pool A features Argentina, Chile, Trinidad & Tobago and the host Dominican Republic.
