Spain Spoils U.S. Women's Field
Hockey Champions Challenge Opener, 2-1
Catania,
Italy Nuria Camon and Silvia Munoz scored first half goals as Spain spoiled the
U.S. women's field hockey team's Champion Challenge opener, 2-1.
Spain jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Camon connected on a field goal in the sixth
minute, and then extended the lead to 2-0 on a field goal by Munoz.
U.S. goalkeeper Peggy Storrar left the game with an injury after the second Spain goal and
was replaced by Amy Tran in the U.S. cage. Tran and the U.S. defense kept Spain scoreless
for the remainder of the game, but the U.S. could only draw as close as 2-1 on Jill
Reeve's penalty corner blast in the 58th minute.
Storrar is expected to be able to return
to action later in the tournament.
In its second year, the Champion Challenge annually features the world's top 7-12 ranked
teams. The field includes #7 Germany, #8 Spain, #9 United States, #10 Japan, #11 New
Zealand and host Italy.
In other first day action, Germany
defeated Italy, 5-0 and Japan defeated New Zealand, 2-1.
The USA returns to action Sunday against
New Zealand.
