Kim Miller receives some congratulations from Melanie Meerschwam after scoring her second goal in an 8-0 win over Jamaica. Miller and Meerschwam combined for four of the team's 8 goals in an 8-0 USA win.

U.S. Field Hockey Breezes Past Jamaica, 8-0

Virginia Beach, Va. – Kim Miller, Melanie Meerschwam and Dina Rizzo scored two goals each as the U.S. women's field hockey team sailed past Jamaica, 8-0 in the second game of a four game series.

"Finally," said Meerschwam who had personally battled a two-year scoring drought and watched her team go scoreless in three games against world champion Argentina earlier in the month. "We created some great scoring opportunities and actually put them in this time," laughed Meerschwam. "That's what we've been working on, and today we really were able to capitalize on our opportunities."

Kelli Gannon put the U.S. on top early with a goal off a penalty corner in the 5th minute, before Rizzo connected on the first of her two field goals three minutes later to give the USA a quick 2-0 lead.

Preparing for a bridal shower thrown by her teammates in her honor later Saturday evening, Miller showed her appreciation by contributing a goal at the 25-minute mark before adding another score early in the second half. Miller's wedding is scheduled for early July.

Meerschwam added her first goal of the game at the 28-minute mark to give the U.S. a 4-0 halftime lead. Jessica Coleman connected on a penalty corner to open the second half before Miller Meerschwam and Rizzo concluded the scoring.

Jamaica's best opportunities to avoid the shutout came with three penalty corner opportunities, but the visitors attempts either misfired or were snuffed out by U.S. goalkeeper Jill Dedman.

Jamaica will continue its series in the U.S. on Sunday at 6 p.m. before concluding the tour on Monday at 4:45 p.m. All games are open to the public and there is no charge for admission.

Both Jamaica and the U.S. are preparing for the Pan American Games, Aug. 2-13 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The winner of the Pan Am Games receives the continent’s automatic berth in the 2004 Olympic Games.
