SANTO DOMINGO The U.S. Field Hockey womens national team sloshed through a second half downpour to defeat Canada, 3-0, in the final game of pool play at the Pan American Games. With the win, the U.S. (3-0) earns the top seed in Pool B and will play Pool A runner-up Chile (2-1) in the first semifinal match at 17:30, Sunday Aug. 10 at the Parque del Este Hockey Stadium. World champion an defending Pan Am champ Argentina (3-0) will meet Uruguay (1-1-1) in the second semifinal. Im really proud of the players, said U.S. coach Beth Anders. Canada really came out hard, they really did, and Im very pleased how we withstood their initial thrust. Then we settled in and played very well and got our goals. While a steady rain soaked play in the second half, the U.S. needed just a minute of dry time in the first period to take the lead and secure the top spot in Pool B. Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif.) deflected in a Keli Smith pass at the 20 minute mark and one minute late, Tracey Fuchs (Centereach, N.Y) converted a penalty corner to give the U.S. a 2-0 halftime lead. With play moved to the Canadian end for much of the second half, the U.S. weathered Canadas best scoring opportunity when goalkeeper Peggy Storrer (Mahopac, N.Y.) saved Meggan Hunts penalty corner blast in the 44th minute. The U.S. added a final goal in the 62nd minute on a Fuchs penalty corner to end Canada's medal hopes. The 3-0 final goal gave Uruguay a tie-breaking goal-differential over Canada, dropping the 1999 Pan Am bronze medallists into the playoff for the 5th-8th spots. Were happy, but were not done, said Anders on the teams win over its longtime Pan Am rival. We have a lot in front us still. USA 3, Canada
