| US Field Hockey News U.S. Women Lose to Japan; Team to Meet Italy in Champions Challenge 5th Place Game Catania, Italy Japan outlasted the U.S. women's field hockey team, 4-3, to drop the U.S. women into the 5th place game at the Champions Challenge. The USA will meet Italy in the 5th/6th place game on Sunday. Japan will meet New Zealand in the third place game, while Spain and Germany will battle for the tournament championship After a see-saw battle in the first half that featured six goals and three ties, Japan's Keiko Miura scored on a penalty corner goal early in the second half to secure the victory. Miura opened the
scoring in the second minute of the game on a penalty corner past U.S. keeper Peggy
Storrar to give Japan and early 1-0 lead. The USA's Tara Jelley quickly responded with a
penalty corner goal in the ninth minute, only to have Japan answer immediately with a
field goal by Sakae Morimoto in the next minute of play. Miura connected on her gamewinner four minutes into the second half as Storrar and Japanese keeper Rie Terazona held their opponents scoreless for the remainder of the game. The loss was the USA's
third one-goal defeat of the tournament after dropping a 2-1 game to Spain and losing to
Germany, 2-1, in the final minute of play.
