U.S. Women Take Fifth Place at Champions Challenge

Catania, Italy Kate Barber and Kelli Gannon scored two goals each to lead the U.S. women's field hockey team to a 4-1 win over Italy in the 5th/6th place game of the FIH Champions Challenge.

Barber opened the scoring with a field goal in the 14th minute of play and then added the eventual game-winning goal in the 32nd minute to give the USA a 2-1 halftime lead over its tournament host.

Gannon continued the U.S. scoring in the second half with a field goal in the 51st minute before concluding the scoring with a penalty corner goal with two minutes remaining in the game.

With its 5th place finish, the U.S. matches its result from the inaugural Champions Challenge in 2002.

The U.S. team and head coach Beth Anders return to action August 2-13 at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Pan American Games serve as the continental qualifier for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

The U.S  resumes practices for the Pan American Games, 7:30 a.m. -10:30 a.m. July 17-18 and July 21-24 at the team's National Training Center in Virginia Beach. The practices are open to all interested coaches and spectators.
