US Field Hockey U20, U23 Teams to Compete in JFK Tournament

 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – U.S. Field Hockey’s women’s under-20 and under-23 teams will take on an international field at the 39^th John f. Kennedy Memorial Tournament, May 22-25 at the U.S. Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va.

Played for years on The Mall in Washington, D.C., the tournament moves to the Training Center in 2003 and will feature the U.S. junior teams for the first time.

“This is a great opportunity for this young group,” said U.S. junior team coach Tess Ellis, who will guide both teams at the tournament.   “The Under-20 team will be the base for the Junior World Cup team (in 2005), so it is a good experience for them to play against international teams. We have an 8th grader all the way up to 20 year olds, so that says a lot for the development of this team. It’s great that we can play in a tournament here at home and hopefully it will become an annual event for the junior teams.”

     The U23 team scheduled to compete at the tournament included Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.), Jess Coleman (Oceanport, Va.), Joann Engestrom (Middletown, Md.), Kerry Falgowski (Landenburg, Va.), April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa.), Kelsey Keeran (Columbus, Ohio), Meredith Keller (Wilmington, Del.), Tiffany Leister (Oley, Pa.), Abbey Martin (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Lauren Mazziotto (Sewell, N.J.), Lindsay Miller (Gap, Pa.), Kristine Nesburg (Oak Park, Ill.), Katy Potter (Emmaus, Pa.), Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill.), Tiffany Snow (Escondido, Calif.), Maria Whitehead (West Chester, Pa.), Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif.) and Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas).

     Coleman, Engestrom, Martin and Massiotto are also members of the Virginia Beach-based U.S. National team, while Baril, Fronzoni, Leister, Keller, Powers, Snow, Gannon and Johnson all earned collegiate all-America honors in 2002. Snow was the NCAA field hockey player of the year at Old Dominion in 2002.

     The U.S. Under-20 team includes U20 team was comprised of Heidi Beck (Leola, Pa.), Jill Civic (Wescosville, Pa.), Rachel Dawson (Berlin, N.J.), Katelyn Falgowski (Landenberg, Pa.),   Carrie Fetting-Smith (Baltimore, Md.), Katie Grant (Lehighton, Pa.), Anne-Marie Janus (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.), Claire Laubach (Bristow, Va.), Cara-Lynn Lopresti (San Diego, Calif.), Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va.), Brooke Miller (Hummelstown, Pa.), Katy Moyneur (Escondido, Calif.), Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.), Elizabeth Schlossberg (Chevy Chase, Md.), Gracie Sorbello (Davis, Calif.), Amy Stopford (Hillsboro, N.C.), Katy Tran (Grantville, Pa.) and Sara York (Watertown, Mass.).

     The U20 team will also compete as one of the eight teams in U.S. Field Hockey’s Summer League in June and July in Virginia Beach.
