Poland Tops US Field Hockey Men in Indoor World Cup Opener

Steve Danielson scored the USA's lone goal in a 7-1 loss to Poland in the opening game of the Indoor World Cup

Leipzig, Germay – Artur Mikula and Rafal Grotowski scored two goals each to lead Poland to a 7-1 victory over the United States in the opening game of the first FIH Indoor World Cup.

Mikula and Grotowski scored Poland’s first three goals en route to a 4-0 halftime lead. A familiar U.S. antagonist, Mikula scored two goals against the outdoor team the last time the two countries met at the 2001 World Cup Qualifier in Edinburgh, Scotland. Poland won that game, 5-1.

The U.S. created more scoring chances in the second half, and 1996 Olympian Steve Danielson finally put the U.S. on the scoreboard with a penalty corner goal with 8 minutes remaining in the game. Danielson’s goal cut the Poland lead to 5-1, but it was as close as the U.S. would get as Poland answered with a pair of goals in the final five minutes.

The game was broadcast life on Eurosport television and online through Eurosport’s website.

Coach Billy McPherson’s team continues play in the 12-team tournament on Thursday with a pair of games against Australia and South Africa.

Members of the U.S. team include Danielson, Jeremy Cook, Pat Cota, Pat Harris, Peter Jones, Ryan Langford, Olaf Maack , Chris Terrebonne, Shawn Hindy, Daniel Dion, goalkeepers Andrew Duncan and Miland Tyburec.
