US Field Hockey Men Down Dominican Republic, Place Second Pan Am Cup Qualifier

Colorado Springs (May 11) - The U.S. men's field hockey team defeated the Dominican Republic, 16-1, to earn a second place finish at the Pan American Cup Qualifier in Santo Domingo.

Finishing second at the tournament behind Cuba, the U.S. secured a spot in the Pan American Cup tournament scheduled for next May in London, Ontario. The top five teams from the tournament qualified for the Cup including champion Cuba, third place Mexico, fourth place Netherlands Antilles and fifth place Puerto Rico.

Jarred Martin scored five goals and Pat Harris added three scores to lead the U.S. to the victory. The goals raised Martin's tournament total to nine while teammates Daraspreet Kainth and Shawn Hindy added two goals each and Shawn Nakamura, Ian Scally, Pat Cota and David Schmoyer all added their names to the scoring column.

After the U.S. took a commanding 6-0 lead at halftime, the U.S. added six more scores in the second half before the host Dominican Republic got on the scoreboard on a field goal by Manuel Almonte Nunez at the 60-minute mark.

Defeated by Cuba, 2-1 earlier in the tournament, the U.S. will have the chance to renew the rivalry with its Caribbean neighbor this summer when both teams return to the Dominican Republic for the Pan American Games, Aug. 1-16.
