US Field Hockey Men’s Malaysia Tour Postponed

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The United States Field Hockey Association has postponed its men’s national team tour to Malaysia following the heightened threat of war in the Middle East and the continuance of a U.S. State Department’s announcement of concerns about risks to American citizens in Malaysia.

Originally scheduled for March 24-April 10, the six-game tour was to include three games featuring the U.S. men against Malaysia’s junior national team in Ipoh, and three games with the U.S. men against the Malaysian national team in Kuala Lumpur. U.S. Field Hockey and the Malaysian Hockey Federation are currently working to reschedule the tour for June.

After discussions with USOC security contacts and USOC State Department representative Steve Bull, we have decided in the interest of safety of the team, that we would postpone the men’s tour to Malaysia,” said U.S. Field Hockey Executive Director Amy Frankenstein.

The current State Department announcement reiterated its concern about the possible heightened risks to American citizens and American interests in Malaysia and Southeast Asia following terrorist activities such as the October terrorist bombing in Bali, Indonesia.

The tour was to serve as part of the U.S. team’s preparations for the Pan American Cup Qualifying Tournament in May and the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic in August.
