US Field Hockey Men's National Team to Host India at Moorpark, Stanford

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The U.S. Field Hockey men's national team will host one of international field hockey's most storied teams when the USA welcomes the national team from India for a five game series, July 12-17, at Moorpark and Stanford, Calif.

In their final preparations for the Pan American Games, Aug. 2-13 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the U.S. men will take on India in 4 p.m. games on July 12, 13 and 15 at Moorpark (Calif.) College, before heading to Northern California for a pair of 6 p.m. games at Stanford.

Traditionally one of the international game's most successful teams, India will be looking to prepare for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament scheduled for march, 2004 in Madrid. India placed 7th at the 2000 Olympic Games before dropping to a disappointing 10th place finish at the 2002 World Cup. India rebounded for a second place finish at the 2002 Asian Games where the team narrowly missed an automatic berth in the 2004 Olympic Games with a 4-3 loss to Korea in the championship game. India's rich field hockey history includes a record 8 Olympic gold medals and a streak of 30 straight Olympic victories from 1928-1960.

The U.S. team and head coach Shiv Jagday will be looking to earn an Olympic berth of their own at the Pan American Games where the winner earns the continental spot in the 2004 Games in Athens. Defending Pan Am champion Canada, 2001 World Cup Qualifier Champion Argentina and 2000 Pan American Cup champion Cuba are the pre-Pan Am favorites in Santo Domingo.

The India/U.S. games mark the first meeting between the two teams since the 1996 Olympic Games when India earned a 4-0 win over the U.S. in Atlanta.
