US Field Hockey Indoor Tournament Continues at Ursinus College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – U.S. Field Hockey continues its National Indoor Tournament this weekend when the women’s open division takes to the court, March 22 and 23 at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa.

The second of three weekends for the National Indoor Tournament, the women’s open division tourney features 16 teams competing in four pools in the two-day event. Featuring club teams for women of college age and older, the tournament will crown a new champion in 2003 following the absence of defending champion Enigma (Pa.). Three-time champion Red Rose (Pa.) and 2002 third-place finisher Norlanco (Pa.) will be among the favorites when the tournament opens play at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

In bringing the tournament to Ursinus, U.S. Field Hockey returns to the home of the Field Hockey Hall of Fame and one of the nation’s most storied college teams. Ursinus competed in the first three Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) championship games from 1975-77, and was the college home to 1984 U.S. Olympic coach Vonnie Gros (’57) as well as Olympic bronze medalists Beth Anders (‘73) and Gina Buggy (’77).

Held March 7-9 in Virginia Beach, the  first of the tournament’s three weekends produced champions in eight U19 pools including Firestyx (Pa.), Xcalibur Justice (Pa.), Storm Trooper Typhoons (Pa.),  Xcalibur Braveheart (Pa.), Strikers II (Md.), Rampage (Va.), Spirit Eagles Green (N.J.) and Rochester Blizzards Blue (N.Y.). The tournament for U16 and U14 divisions is scheduled for April 4-6 in Virginia Beach.

A furiously paced version of the outdoor game, indoor field hockey features six players on a team trying to push a ball into the opposing team’s goal. Players use special indoor sticks that are thinner and flatter than their outdoor counterparts and must “push,” rather than “hit” the ball while attempting to score.

Schedules and results for the National Indoor Tournament are available at the U.S. Field Hockey website at www.usfieldhockey.com.
