Athletes Seek Selection to US Field Hockey 2004 Women's Junior Teams at A-Camp

Colorado Springs -- The U.S. Field Hockey Association will select its 2004 women’s junior national teams during the elite A Camp selection trials, Jan. 2-4, at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach.

      Eighty-five of the nation's top collegiate and high school age athletes will compete for spots on the 2004 U.S. Under-19 team and U.S. Under-21 team during the weekend camp. Athletes earned invitations to A Camp through performances in U.S. Field Hockey programs such as 2003 junior teams, B Camp, the USA Field Hockey Summer League, the National Hockey Festival and invitations from the USA Field Hockey coaching staff.

      Athletes at A Camp range from high school players such as 15-year old Katelyn Falgowski (Landenburg, Pa./Gunning St. Marks High School) to college All-America selections Kayla Bashore (Shoemakersville, Pa./Univ. of Indiana ’05), Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del./Univ. of Maryland ’06), ), Katie Grant (Lehighton, Pa,/Duke Univ. ’06), Kristen Madden (Concord, N.H./Boston College ’06), Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va./Princeton ’05) and Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa./Univ. of Maryland ’06

      The A Camp roster includes 69 collegiate athletes and 16 high school standouts. The University of Maryland will send the most athletes to A Camp with seven, followed by the University of North Carolina and University of Richmond with five selections each. Princeton Univ., Penn State Univ. and the College of William & Mary are represented by four athletes while NCAA Division I National Champion Wake Forest Univ. and runner-up Duke each will

send three athletes to A Camp.
           At A-Camp, the selected athletes will participate in an intensive weekend of skill and tactics training capped by selections to the 2004
U.S. teams. In addition to the junior teams selected at A Camp, USA Field Hockey has added selections to its senior national team during individual trials in Nov. and Dec. The senior team will attempt to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, March 19-27. USA Field Hockey  will also select a U.S. Under-16 in 2004 team at this summer’s AAU Junior Olympic Games.
    Once selected, the U.S. U-19 and U-21 teams will compete in various domestic and international events in 2004. The U19 team will in the U.S. Field Hockey Summer League and at annual JFK International Tournament in
Virginia Beach, while the U21 team will train regularly at regional sites and compete in an international tour.
