US Field Hockey Selects 2002
Women's National Team Colorado Springs -- The U.S. Field Hockey
Association has announced selections to its 2002 women's national squad following open
trials at the team's U.S. Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach.
The 18-member squad features 16 athletes from the 2001 team including 1996
Olympians Tracey Fuchs (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Katie Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.), Antoinette
Lucas (Richmond, Va.) and Jill Reeve (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.).
All selections to the team will now take part in the US Field Hockey residency
program where they will live and train in Virginia Beach in preparation for major
international events including the 2002 World Cup and 2004 Olympic Games.
A two-time Olympian Fuchs has competed in more international matches (210) than any
player in US Field Hockey history, while Lucas, a 12-year national team veteran, returns
to the squad after a brief retirement in
2000. Reeve (1999) and Kauffman (2000) have each collected U.S. Field Hockey Athlete of
the Year honors, but the team will be without Reeve and forward Tara Jelley (Greenfield,
Mass.) after the two suffered anterior cruciate ligament during February's Champions
Challenge in South Africa.
Head coach Tracey Belbin's squad also
includes veterans Kate Barber (West Chester, Pa.), Jill Dedman (Orange, Conn.), Tracey
Larson (Morrisville, Pa.), Kristen McCann (Allentown, Pa.),
Melanie Meerschwam (Amstelveen, The Netherlands), Kim Miller (Virginia Beach, Va.),
Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.), Mimi Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.), Peggy Storrar (Mahopac,
NY) and Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.). The team added two-time All-America
selections Jenny Everett (Rutland, Vt., Wake Forest) and Robyn Kenney (Readington, N.J.,
Boston Univ.) to the squad following the trials. Both Everett and Kenney earned selection
to the U.S. Under-23 team in January, and will now join the national team in full-time
residency in Virginia Beach. The U.S. schedule for 2002 includes a
three-game World Cup qualifying series with India to decide the final team to advance to
the World Cup, Nov. 24 - Dec. 8 in Perth, Australia. The series became necessary when the
U.S. was unable to attend the World Cup Qualifying Tournament following September's
terrorist attacks. Dates for the series have not yet been finalized. The U.S. team will also travel to
Japan, April 29-May 6 for a six-nation tournament with Australia, Germany, Korea, Russia
and Japan and will tour New Zealand for a series of games, May 7-19. Back in home in the
U.S., the team is tentatively scheduled for a series against top NCAA Division I teams in
the early fall before hosting a four nation tournament with England, Germany and a team to
be announced, Oct. 6-13 at the U.S. Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia
Beach.
