US Field Hockey Women, India Play to Draw in Game 1 of World Cup Qualifying Series

Cannock, EnglandTracey Fuchs scored on a penalty corner goal in the 51st minute to pull the U.S. women’s field hockey team to a 1-1 draw with India in the first game of their three-game World Cup qualifying series.

“We didn’t start off all that great,” said Fuchs whose team surrendered a goal early in the first half. “We didn’t play our best game, but we still managed a tie. We know that every game is going to go right down to the wire.”

The draw ensures a third game in the best-of-three series. Game two is scheduled for Sunday with game three slated for Tuesday at the Cannock Hockey Club. The series follows the classic tournament-style scoring with teams receiving 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss. Should the teams remain tied following Tuesday’s third game, the winner will be determined by  International Hockey Federation tie-breaking criteria including goal differential and goals scored.

In Saturday’s game, India took an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute when Mamta Khar knocked in a goal following a scramble in front of the USA net.

The lead would hold through the first half until Fuchs connected on a straight hit off a penalty corner mid-way through the second half to tie the game at 1-1.

The winner of the series will advance to the World Cup, Nov. 28- Dec. 8 in Perth, Australia.
