US Field Hockey Women Named USOC Team of the Month

Colorado Springs, Colo.   The U.S. Field Hockey women’s national team has been named October’s Team of the Month by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).

The USOC recognition comes as the team prepares for the FIH World Cup, Nov. 24 –Dec. 8 in Perth, Australia.

The U.S. team earned the honor after winning the inaugural International Atlantic Cup, Oct. 9-13, at the team’s national training center in Virginia Beach, Va.  Coach Tracey Belbin’s team defeated Ireland, 3-2, in extra time in the championship game to capture the title. The U.S. also recorded wins over Scotland (2-1) and Mexico (7-0) in winning the four-nation tournament.

U.S. captain Tracey Fuchs (Centereach, N.Y.) nearly made it a sweep of the month’s USOC awards for the U.S. team after the veteran midfielder finished second in the balloting for the individual female athlete of the month. Fuchs, who scored two-goals in the championship game including the game winner in extra time, finished a mere two points behind Judo’s Marti Malloy in the USOC voting. Malloy earned the USOC honor after capturing the women's 57kg division at the RendezVous Judo Championships in Montreal, Canada, Oct. 17.   Triathlete Tim DeBoom  earned the men’s individual honor after winning the Ironman World Title for the second straight year, Oct. 19 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

The honored U.S. team is the same squad that will represent the U.S. at the World Cup and includes Head Coach Tracey Belbin (Virginia Beach, Va.), Asst. Coach Tess Ellis (Va, Beach, Va.), Kate Barber (West Chester, Pa.), Katie Beach (West Lawn, Pa.), Jill Dedman (Orange, Conn.), Jenny Everett (Rutland, Vt.), Tracey Fuchs (Centereach, N.Y.), Kelli Gannon (Escondio, Calif), Tara Jelley (Greenfield, Mass., 30),  Tracey Larson (Morrisville, Pa.), Carrie Lingo (Rehoboth Beach, Del.), Antoinette Lucas (Richmond, Va.), Kristen McCann (Allentown, Pa.), Melanie Meerschwam (Princeton N.J.), Kim Miller (Virginia Beach, Va.), Jill Reeve (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.), Keli Smith (Selingsgrove, Pa.), Mimi Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.), Peggy Storrar (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.).
