Dawson, Martin, Rizzo, Woolley Added to U.S. Field Hockey's National Team Roster

Colorado Springs (8/16/02) -- U.S. Field Hockey Association has added four athletes to its women’s national squad and residency training program following open trials at the team’s U.S. Field Hockey National Training center in Virginia Beach.

            Head coach Tracey Belbin added Under-23 team players Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.), Abby Martin (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Abbey Woolley (Ocean City, N.J.) to the senior squad roster, while welcoming back defender Natalie Dawson (Berlin, N.J.) to the residency program. Dawson had left the team early in 2002 to complete her degree at the Univ. of Iowa.

            Named to the national team in 2001, Dawson earned 13 caps for the U.S. while competing at the 2001 Korea Telecom Cup in Seongnam, Korea and the first Champions Challenge in Johannesburg, South Africa in February, 2002. She earned All-America honors at the Univ. of Iowa in 2000 and led the Hawkeyes to the NCAA semifinals in 1999.

            A 2001 first-team All-America selection at the Univ. of Maryland, Rizzo helped lead Maryland to the 1999 NCAA Championship and a runner-up finish in 2001. She earned selection to the U.S. Under-18 team in 1997 and played as a member of the U.S. Under-21 teams at the 2000 Junior Pan American Championship    (2nd place) and 2001 Junior World Cup (14th). 

            A two-time All-America at the Univ. of North Carolina, Martin returns to the national team after earning a spot on the 2001 squad. She owns seven international caps earned in helping the U.S. to a silver medal at the first Pan Americas Cup (formerly Americas Cup). She first earned selection to a U.S. junior U21 team in 1997, and played in two Junior World Cup tournaments in 1997 (12th) and 2001 (14th).Her brother Jarred is currently a member of the U.S. men’s national team.

            Another member of the 2001 U.S. Junior World Cup team, Woolley joins the national team after earning her first junior team selection in 1999. Her goal in the final seconds led the U.S. to a 3-2 win over Spain at the 2001 Junior World Cup, and her two gaols at the 2000 Pan American Junior Championships helped lift the U.S. to a silver medal finish.. A 2002 graduate of the Univ. of North Carolina, Woolley earned all-region honors for the Tar Heels in 2001, and helped led the team to a NCAA runner-up finish in 2000.

            The new members of the U.S. team will have a chance to see their first action against last year’s NCAA semifinalist during the Collegiate Challenge, Aug. 23 (at Michigan), Aug. 25 at Maryland and Sept. 5 (at Wake Forest) and Sept. 7 (at Princeton).

            The U.S. team will then host Mexico, Ireland and Scotland at the International Atlantic Cup, Oct. 9-13 in Virginia Beach before heading to the World Cup, Nov. 24- Dec. 8, in Perth, Australia.
