US Field Hockey to Conduct Women’s National Team Open Trials in Virginia Beach

Colorado Springs, Colo. –U.S. Field Hockey will conduct open trails for the U.S. women’s national team, August 12-14, at the U.S. Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va.

The annual trial is open to all U.S. citizen female athletes who have graduated from college in the spring of 2002, have previously graduated from college or who are willing to leave school in order to commit to the team’s full-time residency program.

Through the trials, head coach Tracey Belbin and U.S. Field Hockey selectors will look to supplement the talent on the current 18-member U.S. roster in preparation for the 2002 World Cup, Nov. 24-Dec. 8 in Perth, Australia and future international events. The U.S. recently qualified for the World Cup with a thrilling best-of-three series victory over India, June 22-25 in England.

Athletes selected from the trial are expected to relocate to Virginia Beach immediately to join the team in its residency program. Initiated in April 2002, the residency program requires the athletes to live and work in Virginia Beach while the team trains full-time for international competitions.

Any new team members selected from the trial could see their first action for the USA during the team’s Collegiate Challenge against last year’s NCAA semifinalists. In the Challenge, the U.S. national team will take on the Univ. of Michigan (Aug. 23), Univ. of Maryland (Aug. 25), Wake Forest Univ. (Sept. 5) and Princeton Univ. (Sept. 7) at each school’s home campus. The USA will compete in its next international competition when it hosts Mexico, Ireland and Scotland in the Atlantic Cup, Oct. 5-13 in Virginia Beach.

Additional information on the trials, including fee requirements and registration materials, is available on the U.S. Field Hockey website at http://www.usfieldhockey.com/programs/elite/w_open_trial.htm
