US Field Hockey U16 Open Vancouver Youth Festival at 2-0

Colorado Springs (Aug 3, 2002) – The U.S. Field Hockey men’s Under-16 team won its first two games on the opening day of the Vancouver Youth Festival, August 2-4.

The young U.s. team defeated Vancouver Blue, 1-0, in the first game on a penalty corner goal by Sean Harris (Moorpark, Calif.) in the fourth minute of play. Goalkeeper Todd Sandlund (Ventura, Calif.) made the goal stand for the rest of the match in earning the shutout.

In the team's second game of the day, Kyle Maddux (Camarillo, Calif.) scored three goals and Harris and Richard Jordan (Camarillo, Calif.) added two apiece as the USA downed Calgary, 8-0. Sammie Ibrahim (Simi Valley, Calif.) collected the other score for the U.S. as goalkeeper Tyson Reeves (Ventura, Calif.) earned the shutout. The U.S. took a 5-0 halftime lead on its way to the win.

            The six-team tournament features the young U.S. team in competition with squads from Vancouver, Calgary and Ontario. The U.S. will face Vancouver Blue and Ontario on Aug. 2, Vancouver U18 and Calgary on Aug. 3 before concluding the round-robin tourney against Vancouver Gold on Aug. 4.  U.S. national team head coach Shiv Jagday leads the team at the tournament.

            The 16-member travel squad includes Emmad Faroouqui (Canoga Park, Calif.), Jonathon Ginolfi (Moorpark, Calif.), Michael Halsell (Camarillo, Calif.), Sean Harris (Moorpark, Calif.), Sammie Ibrahim (Simi Valley, Calif.), Richard Jordan (Camarillo, Calif.), Gurpal Kundi (Glendora, Calif.), Kyle Maddux (Camarillo, Calif.), Malachi Mahan (Camarillo, Calif.), Chris Niles (Camarillo, Calif.), Austin Pile (Fort Collins, Colo.), Tyson Reeves (Ventura, Calif.), Todd Sandlund (Ventura, Calif.), Shaya Taherizadegan (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Spencer Wagner (Colorado Springs, Colo.).
