US Field Hockey U16 Men to Play in Vancouver Youth Festival

Colorado Springs (7/25/02) – The U.S. Field Hockey men’s Under-16 team will continue its initiation into international play when the team travels to Canada for the Vancouver Youth Festival, August 2-4.

            The six-team tournament features the young U.S. team in competition with squads from Vancouver, Calgary and Ontario. The U.S. will face Vancouver Blue and Ontario on Aug. 2, Vancouver U18 and Calgary on Aug. 3 before concluding the round-robin tourney against Vancouver Gold on Aug. 4.  U.S. national team head coach Shiv Jagday will lead the team at the tournament.

            Selected during tryouts in February, the team serves as in introduction to international competition for the young players while preparing athletes for future national team consideration.

            The 16-member travel squad includes Emmad Faroouqui (Canoga Park, Calif.), Jonathon Ginolfi (Moorpark, Calif.), Michael Halsell (Camarillo, Calif.), Sean Harris (Moorpark, Calif.), Sammie Ibrahim (Simi Valley, Calif.), Richard Jordan (Camarillo, Calif.), Gurpal Kundi (Glendora, Calif.), Kyle Maddux (Camarillo, Calif.), Malachi Mahan (Camarillo, Calif.), Chris Niles (Camarillo, Calif.), Austin Pile (Fort Collins, Colo.), Tyson Reeves (Ventura, Calif.), Todd Sandlund (Ventura, Calif.), Shaya Taherizadegan (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Spencer Wagner (Colorado Springs, Colo.).

            In its first international competition in the spring, the young U.S. team went 2-2-1 against German club teams in a five-game series in Aachen, Germany.
