US Field Hockey Names AAU Junior Olympic Teams

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The U.S. Field Hockey Association has announced its selections for the 2002 AAU Junior Olympic Games, Aug. 4 -10, in Knoxville, Tenn.

Selected as a result of individual performances at U.S. Field Hockey's National Futures Tournament held in early July, the 120 athletes will fill the rosters of the eight teams competing in the AAU event. The National Futures Tournament is the culminating event of U.S. Field Hockey's Olympic talent identification and development program.

Scheduled for Aug. 7-10 at Knoxville’s Holston River Park, the field hockey competition of the multi-sport event features eight teams competing in round-robin pool play before advancing to crossover games. The tournament concludes with classification games on Aug. 10 featuring the bronze medal game at 2 p.m. followed by the gold medal contest at 3:30 p.m.

A top staff of U.S. Field Hockey coaches will lead the teams at the event including Sarah Catlin (Philadelphia, Pa.), Amanda Janney (Fort Worth , Texas), Terry Martin (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.),  Sharon Sweger (Conestoga, Pa.), Candace Thurman (Rockville, Md.), Cindy Tindall (Tabernacle, N.J.), Julie Weiss (Newtown Square, Pa.) and Lauren Worley (Philadelphia, Pa.)

The AAU Junior Olympic Games will also serve as selection trials for the U.S. Under-16 National Squad. U.S. Field Hockey will select 20-30 athletes to the 2002-03 Under-16 squad in an effort to introduce the young players to international competition and prepare them for future National Team consideration.
