US Men Place Second, U19 Women third at Cal Cup

Moorpark, Calif.  The USA Eagles, a team comprised of members of the U.S. men’s national field hockey team earned a second place finish and the U.S. Women's Under-19 field hockey team took home a bronze medal in their respective divisions at the 31st California Cup.

      Canada’s Planet Hockey earned the men’s Super Division championship edging the Eagles in goal differential to capture the crown. Both teams finished the seven-team round-robin tournament with 4-0-2 records.  

            The U.S. men’s roster included 1996 Olympian Steve Danielson (San Diego, Calif.), Jang Badesha (Santa Clara, Calif.), Rinku Bhamber (Simi Valley, Calif.), Shawn Hindy (Westlake Village, Calif.), Binh Hoang (Westlake, Calif.), Daraspreet Kainth (Fullerton, Calif.), Koijan Kainth (Fullerton, Calif.), Ryan Langford (Camarillo, Calif.), Jarred Martin (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Shawn Nakamura (Camarillo, Calif.) a Daljeet Sagoo (Fullerton, Calif.), Bryan Rauschenberger (Simi Valley, Calif), Ian Scally (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and goalkeeper Afzal Siddiqui (Berkeley, Calif.).

      Head coach Cheryl Murtagh's (Northeastern Univ. head coach) Under-19 team placed third in the tournament after dropping a penalty stroke competition to the Terrapin Express in the tournament semifinals. The eventual tournament champions, the Terrapin Express included current and former members of the U.S. senior and junior National Teams including Autumn Welsh (US National team 2000), Abby Martin (US U23), Kris Filat (US National team 1990-00), Andrea Wieland (US Nat’l team, 1991-2000), Dina Rizzo (US U-23), Lauren Mazziotto (US U23) and Univ. of Maryland head coach Missy Meharg (US Nat’l team, 1985-91). The team also included 1998-99 NCAA Player of the Year, Sally Northcroft. Terrapin Express won its second straight title with a penalty stroke win over Slime in the final.  The Slime narrowly defeated the U.S. Under-19 team, 1-0, in pool play and included current collegiate coaches Marcia Pankratz (Michigan), Jen Halliday (Ball St.), Sheryl Johnson (Stanford) and Tracey Griesbaum (Iowa).

      The U.S. women defeated Stanford University’s entry, Stanford Cardinal, 2-0, in the third-pace game behind goals by Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Pa.) and Katie Grant (Lehighton, Pa.).

   The U.S. Under-19 roster included  Heidi Beck (Leola, Pa,/James Madison), Emily Boyer (Oak Park, Ill./Univ. of Maryland), Carey Fetting-Smith (Baltimore, Md./Univ. of North Carolina), Claire Laubach (Bristow, Va./Wake Forest Univ.), Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va./Princeton Univ.), Katy Moyner (Escondido, Calif./Univ. of Michigan) and goalkeeper Katy Tran (Grantville, Pa./Univ. of North Carolina) along with high school standouts Rachel Dawson (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional), Katie Grant (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton Area), Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional), Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa./Wyoming Seminary), Amy Stopford (Hillsborough N.C./Durham Academy) and Sara York (Watertown, Mass/Watertown) Katherine Blair (Louisville, Ky/Kentucky Country Day) and  Paige Schmidt  (West Chester, Pa./Tower School).

The USA Bears, the men’s under-19 entry in the tournament, placed 7th in the men’s Super Division. The roster included only four players from last year’s 7th place Cal Cup team including Sean Harris (Moorpark, Calif.), Todd Robinson (Ventura, Calif.), Ramandeep Sandhu (Camarillo, Calif.) and David Schmoyer (Doyelstown, Pa.).  The team also included U16 team members Michael Halsell (Camarillo, Calif.), Malachi Mahan (Camarillo, Calif.), Richard Jordan (Camarillo, Calif.), Gurpal Kundi (Glendora, Calif.) and Chris Niles (Camarillo, Calif.) in addition to Kulwinder Ahluwalia (Irvine, Calif.), Sandev Grewall  (Laguna Nigel, Calif.), Daniel Jordan (Camarillo, Calif.), Jaspal Grewall (Laguna Nigel, Calif.), Arjan Reyatt (Brea, Calif.) and  goalkeeper Jeb Saez (Thousand Oaks, Calif.).
