US Field Hockey Names 2002 Women's Under-16 Team

COLORADO SPRINGS -- The U.S. Field Hockey Association welcomed the newest members of its international elite teams with the selection of the 2002 U.S. Women's Under-16 Squad.

Selected by U.S. Field Hockey as a result of performances at the AAU Junior Olympics held in early August, the team will have the opportunity to compete in international events during the upcoming year.  Entering its fifth year as a US Field Hockey program, the U16 team previously placed third at the annual Netherlands Easter Tournament in Valkenswaard in each of the last four years.

The 2002 squad features four repeat selections from the 2001 team including Paige Schmidt (Westtown, Pa.), Lauren Walls (Berlin, N.J.), Mallory Weisen (Middleburg, Pa.) and Kiersten Wood (Lititz, Pa.).

The team includes a pair of twin sisters in Lauren and Ashley Walls who become the second pair of twins to be named to the team since 1999 when Natalie and Alexis Martirosian of Richmond, Va. were selected to the squad.

The roster also includes Christina Boarman (Fulton, Md.), Kay Brown (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Meredith Brown (Elkton, Md.); Michelle Cheek (Marmora, N.J.), Laura Dean (Dear, Del.), Alyssa Emrick (Bangor, Pa.), Katelyn Falgowski (Landenberg, Pa.), Gwendolyn Hunter (Seaville, N.J.), Anne Janus (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.), Michelle Kasold (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Ashley Lennington (Carlisle, Pa.), Amy Lewis (Mount Holly, N.J.), Shayna McGeehan (Grantville, Pa.), Nicole Ng (Saratoga, Calif.), Roselyn Miller (Saratoga, Calif.), Kadi Sickel (Plaiston, N.H.), Laura Suchoski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.), Allison Tanner (New Providence, Pa.) and Sarah Wilhite (Hummelstown, Pa.)

U.S. Field Hockey's coaching committee will select the coach of the U.S. Under-16 Team in November.

The Under-16 Team serves to introduce young players to international competition while preparing athletes for future National Team consideration. In addition to the Under-16 team, the U.S. Field Hockey Association will sponsor an Under-23 Team, Under-19 Team and the U.S. National Team.

The U.S. Field Hockey Association is the National Governing Body for men’s and women’s field hockey in the United States, and is responsible for the training and preparation of teams to participate in the Olympic and Pan American Games and for the promotion and development of the sport throughout the United States.
