US Women's Field Hockey Team To Meet Top Teams at Korea Telecom Cup

Colorado Springs -- After spending the last two months living and training at its new home in Virginia Beach, the U.S. Women’s National Field Hockey Team returns to international competition June 27-July 4 at the 3rd Telecom Cup in Seognam, Korea.

In Korea, the U.S. will take on Olympic gold medallist Australia as well as China, England, Japan and host Korea in the round-robin tournament.

“Korea will be an excellent experience for all the US players,” said U.S. coach Tracey Belbin. “It is an opportunity to play some of the top nations in the world. We will have to
adapt from playing the fast and open style of teams like Korea and Australia, to the more physical and closed style of the English. I know the team is looking forward to meeting China again since our last encounter at the (Olympic) Qualifier in England last year."

At the Qualifier in Milton Keynes, China scored two early goals and held on to defeat the U.S., 2-0. The loss cost the U.S. team a trip to the Olympic Games.

After opening the tournament with China on June 27, the U.S. will meet Korea on June 28, Japan on June 30, Australia on July 1 and England on July 3. Classification matches are scheduled for July 4.

“Playing again in a tournament situation is the practice we need. Particularly with the caliber of all these teams” said Belbin.  “In this tournament, we will need to be more consistent from game to game, have a high level of basics, and be able to execute all our set plays when the opportunity arises.”

Three of the U.S. opponents in the tournament are coming off Olympic Games appearances with Australia taking the gold medal and Korea ninth. Competing as Great Britain, players from England’s team placed eighth in Sydney. Australia and Korea have already earned trips to next year’s Women’s World Cup, while England and Japan will join the U.S. at the World Cup Qualifier, Sept. 18-30 in Amiens/Abbeville, France.

The U.S. team for the tournament includes goalkeepers Peggy Storrar and Amy Tran in addition to Kate Barber, Natalie Dawson, Kelli Gannon, Tracey Fuchs, Tara Jelley, Katie Kauffman,  Tracey Larson, Carrie Lingo, Kristen McCann, Melanie Meerschwam, Jill Reeve, Mimi Smith and Carla Tagliente.

Following the trip to Korea, the team will travel to Germany for games with the German National Team and The Netherlands A and B squads, July 19-29.

Currently, 15 athletes on the 23-member U.S. squad have relocated to Virginia Beach as part of the residency program, while the remaining members of the team complete their college degrees.
