US Field Hockey 2001 Women's Under 21 Team

The U.S. Women's Under-21 Field Hockey Team will take its first steps in preparation for this May's Junior Women's World Cup with a series of games against Germany's junior team.

The U.S. will play three games against the German junior squad when the team travels to Cologne, March 5-11. The U.S. squad will also take on a local club team on the tour.

The U.S. team could see the Germans again in the Junior Women's World Cup, scheduled for May 14-26 in Buenos Aires. The U.S. will compete in Pool A of the Junior World Cup with India, New Zealand and defending champion The Netherlands, while Germany will compete in Pool B with Australia, Chile and Ukraine. The 16-team tournament also includes Pool C teams Argentina, South Africa, Spain and Wales and Pool D entries Canada, England, Korea and Russia.

While in Germany, the team will be under the direction of Tracey Griesbaum while U21 coach Tess Ellis assists with the U.S. National Team at the Americas Cup, March 8-18 in Kingston, Jamaica. Griesbaum directed the team at last year's Junior Pan American Championships before taking over as head coach at the Univ. of Iowa.

Members of the 18-athlete touring team include Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.), Sarah Broderick (Harwich, Mass.), Rachel Dawson (Berlin, NJ), Carey Fetting-Smith (Baltimore, Md.), Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany), April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa.), Stephanie Fuller (No. Potomac, Md.), Kelsey Keeran (Columbus, Ohio), Meredith Keller (Wilmington, Del.), Tiffany Leister (Oley, Pa.), Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va.), Lauren Mazziotto (Sewell, NJ), Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.), Claire Miller (Scarsdale, NY), Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.), Emily White (Finksburg, Md.), Maria Whitehead (West Chester, Pa.) and Abbey Woolley (Ocean City, NJ).

In addition to daily practices at the German Training Center in Cologne, the team will compete against the German Juniors in matches scheduled for Match 6, 9 and 10 with an additional match against a local club team on March 7.
