US Field Hockey Adds Three Athletes To Women's National Team
Roster Colorado Springs -- U.S. Field Hockey and women's head coach Tracey Belbin have added three athletes to the U.S. National Squad roster following the team's open trial, June 6-9 at Old Dominion Univ. Former Boston College goalkeeper Jill Dedman, James Madison sophomore Lindsey Keller and former Old Dominion Honda Award winner Mimi Smith were added to the roster following their performances at the four-day trial. Selected from a field of 14 athletes attending the trial, the new team members will join the U.S. squad in residency at Virginia Beach, where they will live and train together over the next four years. In preparing for the 2002 World Cup, 2003 Pan American Games, 2004 Olympic Games and other major international events, the team will continue practicing at Old Dominion while awaiting the completion of its new training facility in Virginia Beach in the fall of this year. A third-team All-America selection for Boston College in 1999, Dedman was a three-time all-region selection and two-time Big East Conference Goalkeeper of the Year for the Eagles. The Orange, Conn. native becomes the third goalkeeper on the U.S. roster joining Peggy Storrar and Amy Tran. After completing her first season at James Madison, 18-year-old Keller will join the team in the residency program. A defensive standout from Benton, Pa., Keller started 20 of 21 games for the Dukes as a freshman. A Virginia Beach native, Smith rejoins the U.S. Team after a brief retirement in 2000. The 1998 winner of the Honda Award as the collegiate field hockey player of the year, Smith was a two-time All-America at Old Dominion. She earned silver medals with the U.S. team at the Pan Am Games and Sydney International Challenge. Dedman, Keller and Smith will join Storrar, Jill Reeve, Tracey Fuchs, Katie Kauffman, Kate Barber, Kim Miller, Carrie Lingo, Tracey Larson, Kristen McCann, Kelli Gannon, Tara Jelley, Melanie Meerschwam and Carla Tagliente when the team travels to Germany, July 19-29. The U.S. will take on Germany and The Netherlands on the 10-day tour. Prior to the matches in Germany, members of the U.S. team will compete in the Korea Cup, June 27-July 4 in Seognam, Korea in preparation for the World Cup Qualifier, Sept. 18-30 in Amiens/Abbeville, France.
