US Field Hockey Men to Face Egypt, India, Wales in World Cup Qualifier

The US Field Hockey Men's National Team will try to earn a trip to the 2002 World Cup against a team with a long tradition of success and a pair of teams looking to earn their first trips to field hockey's premier event, when the US competes in the 10th World Cup Qualifier, July 17-29 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

      Head coach Shiv Jagday and the U.S. will be grouped with traditional world favorite India along with Wales and Egypt in Pool A of the 16-team tournament.

      India has appeared in all nine previous World Cup tournaments and won the 1975 World Cup title. The team placed ninth in the last World Cup, held in 1998 in Utrecht, The Netherlands.  In addition to its World Cup victory, India has won eight Olympic gold medals including six straight Olympic championships from 1928-1956. India won its last Olympic gold medal in Moscow in 1980 and placed 7th in Sydney in 2000.

      The U.S., Wales and Egypt will all be looking for their first-ever trips to the World Cup. The U.s. and Egypt last appeared in a World Cup qualifier in 1989 where Egypt placed 9th and the U.S., 11th. Wales last appeared in a World Cup Qualifier in 1981 whre the team placed 6th in the 12-team field.

      In the schedule released by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), the U.S. opens play July 18 against Egypt. The team will take on India on July 19 and conclude preliminary pool play on July 21. The top two teams from the pool will then advance to crossover pool play with the top two teams from each of the three other pools for 1-8th places, while the bottom two teams will play for 9th-16th.

      In other pools, Argentina, Bangladesh, Belgium and France will meet in Pool B, Chile, Japan, Scotland and Spain will square off in Pool C, and Canada, Poland, Russia and Zimbabwe will battle in Pool D.

      The top seven teams at the Qualifier will advance to the 2002 World Cup, March 4-16, 2002 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
