Steve Danielson leads a US Team in an attempt to qualify for the 2002 World Cup

Colorado Springs, Colo. -- The U.S. Men's National Field Hockey team will rest its World Cup qualifying hopes on a young but experienced team as head coach Shiv Jagday announced his roster for the World Cup Qualifing Tournament, July 17-29 in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Jagday made the first 16 selections to the Qualifier team following practice sessions in Moorpark, Calif., and will add an additional two athletes to the roster on June 25.
Although averaging just 21.4 years of age, the U.S. team earned international experience with fifth place finishes at the 1999 Pan American Games and 2000 Americas Cup, while 11 members of the team competed at the 2000 Pan American Junior Championships.
Veteran Steve Danielson (San Diego, Calif.) was a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team, and joined Shawn Hindy (Westlake Village, Claif.) at the World Cup Preliminary Tournament in 1996.  Danielson was named U.S. Field Hockey Athlete of the Year in 1998 while Hindy earned the honor in 2000. Goalkeeper Andrew Duncan (Edmonton, Alb.) and 1999 Athlete of the Year Shawn Nakamura (Camarillo, Calif.) started every game at the Pan American Games and Americas Cup, while Binh Hoang (Westlake, Calif.) returns to the U.S. team after previously serving on the senior team from 1994-96.
The U.S. selections also include Americas Cup and Junior Pan Am team members Rinku Bhamber (Simi Valley, Calif.), Patrick Cota (Camarillo, Calif.), Logan Hargett (Ventura, Calif.), Pat Harris (Moorpark, Calif.), Daraspreet Kainth (Fullerton, Calif.), Koijan Kainth (Fullerton, Calif.), Jarred Martin (Saratoga Springs, NY), Daljeet Sagoo (Fullerton, Calif.) and  Mike Shanafelt (Camarillo, Calif.). Bhamber, Cota and Shanafelt also competed on the 1999 Pan American Games team while Kyle Branter (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Todd Robinson (Ventura, Calif.) were members of the Junior Pan American Championships team.
The U.S. opens play at the Qualifier against Russia on July 17th before taking on long-time rival Canada on July19. The team concludes its initial round pool play July 20 against Poland.

The top seven teams at the Qualifier will advance to the 2002 World Cup, March 4-16, 2002 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
