France Outlasts USA Men, 2-1, at World Cup Qualifier

Edinburgh, Scotland - Frederick Soyze's penalty stroke with six minutes remaining in the game lifted France to a 2-1 victory over the United States men's field hockey team at the World Cup Qualifying Tournament.
The loss drops the U.S. to 1-4 at the tournament and 0-2 in the second stage of pool play. The U.S., playing for a final classification spot between 9th and 16th, concludes the second stage on Wednesday against Egypt before entering the final classification round on Friday and Saturday.
The top seven teams at the Qualifier advance to the 2002 World Cup, March 4-16, 2002 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
After Soyze gave France a 1-0 halftime lead with a penalty corner goal in the 15th minute, the momentum swung to the U.S. side when Rinku Bhamber defelected a penalty corner into the goal midway through the second half to tie the game at 1-1. The U.S. continued to control play through much of the second half, when France was awarded the penalty stroke with 7:37 remaining in regulation time. Soyze beat U.S. keeper Andrew Duncan for the game-winning goal to lift France to a 2-0 record in pool H.
The Americans' best chance to tie the game in the final minutes was snuffed out when Shawn Hindy's deflection hit the pads of French keeper Cedric Dagostino to preserve the win for France.
