Chile Tops US Field Hockey Men, 2-1,
at World Cup Qualifier Edinburgh, Scotland - Felipe Montigue scored two goals,
including the game winner with 9 minutes remaining, to lift Chile past the United States,
2-1, in the second stage of the Men's World Cup Qualifier.
The loss drops the U.S. to 1-3 at the 16-team tournament, and 0-1 in Pool H play.
In addition to Chile, the U.S. will meet France and Egypt in Pool H for a chance to play
for final classification spots from 9th -16th place. A top two finish in Pool H will give
the U.S. the opportunity to play for 9th-12th place The top seven teams at the Qualifier
advance to the 2002 World Cup, March 4-16, 2002 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Against Chile, Shawn Hindy put the U.S. on top midway through the first half with a
penalty corner goal in the 19th minute. However, Montigue quickly tied the game with a
penalty corner goal in the 22nd minute for a 1-1 score at halftime. Montigue added his
second goal off a penalty corner at the 61-minute mark to send the U.S. to its third
straight loss.
The U.S. continues play in Pool H on Monday against France.
