Canada tops US Field Hockey Men, 4-2,
at World Cup Qualifier Edinburgh, Scotland - A
revitalized U.S. men's field hockey team saw a second half rally cut short as long-time
rival Canada topped the U.S. 4-2 at the World Cup qualifying Tournament. Riding an emotional high following a 1-0 upset win over Russia in the opening day of play at the 16-team tournament, the young U.S. team quickly found itself with a 3-0 deficit against its northern neighbors 25 minutes into the game. Canada's Ronnie Jagday, son of U.S. head coach Shiv Jagday, contributed to the woes of his father's team with a pair of goals in the first half. Following another Canada goal early in the second half, Binh Hoang put the U.S. on the scoreboard with a field goal, and 16-year-old Pat Harris added a field goal with three minutes remaining to pull the U.S. to within 4-2. Canada snuffed out the U.S. teams comeback hopes in the final minutes to even its tournament record at 1-1. The U.S. also stands at 1-1 at the tournament.
The goals were the first by the U.S. against Canada in a major international
competition since the 1995 Pan American Games. Canada shut out the U.S. 2-0 at the 1999
Pan Am Games and 4-0 at the 2000 Americas Cup. Canada placed 10th at the 2000 Olympic
Games, while the U.S. did not qualify for the Sydney Games.
The U.S. will meet another Olympic team on Friday when they face pool leader
Poland. The 12th place team in Sydney, Poland defeated Russia, 3-1, in Thursday's other
Pool D match. The U.S. will need a win against Poland and a Canada loss or tie against
Russia on Friday to keep its World Cup hopes alive. A U.S. loss will send the team to the
9th-16th pools for final classification.
The top seven teams at the Qualifier advance to the 2002 World Cup, March 4-16,
2002 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
