U.S. Field Hockey Names 2001 Under-16
Men's Team COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Nine athletes have earned repeat
selections to U.S. Field Hockeys Mens Under-16 National squad following
selection trials in Moorpark, Calif. and Hershey, Pa.

The newest members of the U16 squad include Amrit
Ahluwalia (Irvine, Claif.), Nicholas Althouse (Levittown, Pa.), Brett Cavanaugh
(Doyelstown, Pa.), Chase Darwin (Washington, NJ), Reid Fritz (San Diego, Calif.), Michael
Halsell (Camarillo, Calif.), Hunar Kainth (Fullerton, Calif.), William Knecht (Moorpark,
Calif.), Robert Lindsay (Ventura, Calif.), Jason Mallory (Camarillo, Calif.), Chris Niles
(Camarillo, Calif.) and Chraig Padhiar (Huntington Bch, Calif.).
In addition to the Harris brothers, the team
includes another pair of athletes with siblings on the U.S. National squad. Shanafelt is
the brother of U.S. National Team member Mike, while Kainth is the younger brother of
National Team members Koijan and Daraspreet. The youngest members of the Under-16 team are
12 year olds Zayac (Feb 88), Darwin (June 88), Ahluwalia (July 88) and Ginolfi (Aug 88).
The Under-16 team represents the first step in an
athletes elite-team development process and serves to introduce young players to
international competition while preparing athletes for future National Team consideration.
Directed by U.S. Mens National Coach Shiv Jagday and coached by University of
California-Berkeley head coach Shellie Onstead, the team will tour the Netherlands in the
Spring with a series of games in Amsterdam from April 7-16.
In addition to the Under-16 squad, U.S. Field Hockey
sponsors a Mens U.S. National Team along with its womens programs. Selected in
late December last year, the National Team and head coach Shiv Jagday will represent the
U.S. at the World Cup Qualifier in Edinburgh, Scotland, July 17-29. The U.S. men will
compete in Pool A with India, Wales and Egypt. The top seven teams at the Qualifier will
earn trips to the 2002 Men's World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The United States Field Hockey Association is the national governing body for womens and mens field hockey in the United States and is responsible for the training and preparation of teams to participate in international competitions such as the Olympic Games and Pan American Games as well as for the promotion and development of the sport throughout the United States.
