U16 Roster

U.S. Field Hockey Names 2001 Under-16 Men's Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Nine athletes have earned repeat selections to U.S. Field Hockey’s Men’s Under-16 National squad following selection trials in Moorpark, Calif. and Hershey, Pa.

Nine of the squad’s 21 players return from last year’s U.S. Under-16 Team including four-time selections Patrick and Sean Harris. The Harris brothers, who also earned selection to the 2001 U.S. Men's National Team in December, were members of the first U.S. U16 team when the squad made its debut in 1998. Jaspal Grewall (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) returns to the squad for a third year after serving as an alternate in 2000. Second year squad members Danny Jordan (Camarillo, Calif.), Gurpal Kundi (Glendora, Calif.), Eric Shanafelt (Georgetown, Calif.) and Andrew Zayac (Columbia, Md.). Jonathon Ginolfi (Moorpark, Calif.) and Richard Jordan (Camarillo, Calif.) served as alternates on the 2000 squad.

The newest members of the U16 squad include Amrit Ahluwalia (Irvine, Claif.), Nicholas Althouse (Levittown, Pa.), Brett Cavanaugh (Doyelstown, Pa.), Chase Darwin (Washington, NJ), Reid Fritz (San Diego, Calif.), Michael Halsell (Camarillo, Calif.), Hunar Kainth (Fullerton, Calif.), William Knecht (Moorpark, Calif.), Robert Lindsay (Ventura, Calif.), Jason Mallory (Camarillo, Calif.), Chris Niles (Camarillo, Calif.) and Chraig Padhiar (Huntington Bch, Calif.).

In addition to the Harris brothers, the team includes another pair of athletes with siblings on the U.S. National squad. Shanafelt is the brother of U.S. National Team member Mike, while Kainth is the younger brother of National Team members Koijan and Daraspreet. The youngest members of the Under-16 team are 12 year olds Zayac (Feb 88), Darwin (June 88), Ahluwalia (July 88) and Ginolfi (Aug 88).

The Under-16 team represents the first step in an athlete’s elite-team development process and serves to introduce young players to international competition while preparing athletes for future National Team consideration. Directed by U.S. Men’s National Coach Shiv Jagday and coached by University of California-Berkeley head coach Shellie Onstead, the team will tour the Netherlands in the Spring with a series of games in Amsterdam from April 7-16.

In addition to the Under-16 squad, U.S. Field Hockey sponsors a Men’s U.S. National Team along with its women’s programs. Selected in late December last year, the National Team and head coach Shiv Jagday will represent the U.S. at the World Cup Qualifier in Edinburgh, Scotland, July 17-29. The U.S. men will compete in Pool A with India, Wales and Egypt. The top seven teams at the Qualifier will earn trips to the 2002 Men's World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The United States Field Hockey Association is the national governing body for women’s and men’s field hockey in the United States and is responsible for the training and preparation of teams to participate in international competitions such as the Olympic Games and Pan American Games as well as for the promotion and development of the sport throughout the United States.
