Argentina
Qualified: Host, Pan American Junior Championships Champion
Jr World Cup History: 1997 Bronze; 1993 Gold; 1989 6th
Notes: Following a 1993 gold medal at the Junior World Cup, Argentinas
senior team won a silver medal at the 1994 World Cup. A junior bronze in 1997 paved the
way for a Olympic silver medal in 2000. Countries hosting the Junior World Cup have never
won a JWC medal on their own turf.

Australia
Qualified: Oceania Champion
Jr World Cup History: 1997 Silver; 1993 Silver; 1989 DNC
Notes: Suzie Faulkner lead the team in scoring at the Junior World Cup Qualifying
event against New Zealand, while Patrice Donnelly ranks among the scoring leaders in
Australias National Womens Hockey League

Canada
Qualified: 3rd, Pan Am Jr Championships
Jr World Cup History: 1997 11th; 1993 8th; 1989 7th
Notes: Canadas roster features 11 members from the Pan Am Jr Championships,
3rd place team. Canada is one of only six countries to earn a spot in all four Junior
World Cup competitions.

Chile
Qualified: 4th, Pan Am Jr Championships
Jr World Cup History: 1997 DNC; 1993 DNC; 1989 11th
Notes: In the bronze medal game of the Pan American Jr Championships, Chile took
Canada to strokes before losing, 3-2.

England
Qualified: 2nd, European Jr Nations Cup
Jr World Cup History: 1997 7th; 1993 9th; 1989 8th
Notes: England placed second at the 10th European Junior Nations Cup, going
undefeated in pool play before losing to The Netherlands in the final. Along the way,
England defeated Jr World Cup teams Russia (6-1), Germany (3-0), Ukraine (3-0) and Spain
(3-2).

Germany
Qualified: 4th, European Jr Nations Cup
Jr World Cup History: 1997 4th; 1993 Bronze; 1989 Gold
Notes: Germany defeated Korea, 2-0, to win the first Jr World Cup in 1989. The
Germans beat Spain and Russia at the European Jr Nations Cup while suffering losses to
England, The Netherlands and Ukraine.

India
Qualified: Reserve Team; 3rd Jr Asia Cup
Jr World Cup History: First appearance
Notes: The first reserve country, Indias third place team at the Junior Asia
Cup included six members of the senior team that represented India at the Olympic
Qualifying Tournament. Indias Junior team won the 1999 US Four Nations
Tournament with over the USA, England and Chile.

Korea
Qualified: Junior Asia Cup Champion
Jr World Cup History: 1997 5th; 1993 4th; 1989 Silver
Notes: Korea won its third straight Junior Asia Cup with a 2-1 win over China to
qualify for the Junior World Cup.

The Netherlands
Qualified: 1st, European Jr Nations Cup
Jr World Cup History: 1997 Gold; 1993 5th; 1989 4th
Notes: The defending Junior World Cup champions, the Dutch went undefeated in
winning the 10th European Nations Cup, including a 3-0 win over England in the
final.

New Zealand
Qualified: Reserve Team; 2nd Oceania
Jr World Cup History: 1997 DNC; 1993 DNC; 1989 9th
Notes: Originally a distant reserve team, the Kiwis earned a spot in the tourney
after France and China withdrew. In the Oceania series, New Zealand tied Australia, 0-0,
before losing 2-0 and 4-3.

Russia
Qualified: 6th, European Jr Nations Cup
Jr World Cup History: 1997 DNC; 1993 DNC; 1989 (as URS) 3rd
Notes: Russias lone win at the European Jr Nations Cup was a 3-0 victory over
Wales in crossover play.

South Africa
Qualified: Junior Africa Cup Champion
Jr World Cup History: 1997 7th; 1993 DNC; 1989 DNC
Notes: In their last Junior World Cup meeting, South Africa defeated the U.S. 6-0
including two goals by Pietie Coetzee. Coetzee scored another pair of goals against the US
(this time against the US senior team) to lead South Africa to a 2-1 win at the 1998 World
Cup.

Spain
Qualified: 5th, European Jr Nations Cup
Jr World Cup History: 1997 9th; 1993 7th; 1989 DNC
Notes: Spain defeated Russia, 8-1, to place 5th at the European Jr Nations Cup.

Ukraine
Qualified: 3rd, European Jr Nations Cup
Jr World Cup History: 1997 10th; 1993 DNC; 1989 DNC
Notes: Ukraine defeated Germany. 4-2, to capture the bronze medal at the 10th
European Junior Nations Cup.

United States
Qualified: 2nd, Pan Am Jr Championships
Jr World Cup History: 1997 12th; 1993 DNC; 1989 10th
Notes: The team returns 9 members from the Pan Am Jr team including goalkeeper Amy
Tran and forwards Abbey Woolley and April Fronzoni. The US is 1-13 all time in Junior
World Cup play, defeating Zimbabwe, 4-1, in 1989. The U.S. won the Fairplay award for
sportsmanship in 1997.

Wales
Qualified: 7th, European Jr Nations Cup
Jr World Cup History: First appearance
Notes: The two Welsh wins at the European Nations Junior Cup were both over
France, 3-1 and 3-0.
