Champions Challenge Set For South
Africa COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After a
slight delay and a change in venue, the U.S. women's national team will take part in the
first International Hockey Federation (FIH) Champions Challenge, February 9-17, 2002 in
Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa. England, South Africa, Germany,
Korea, India and the United States will participate in the inaugural event developed as a
complement to the annual Champions Trophy competition. The winner of the Challenge will be
elevated to next year's Champions Trophy featuring the world's top six ranked teams. Originally scheduled for India in
December, the event was moved from Delhi following world events in the Middle East. At the Champions Challenge, the U.S.
will take on a field that includes four teams from last year's Olympic Games. Germany
earned a seventh place finish in Sydney, while members of the England team (competing as
Great Britain) placed eighth, Korea ninth and South Africa tenth. The U.S. is currently
ranked 11th in the world standings.
