US Field Hockey To Select 2002 Women's Junior Teams at A-Camp

Colorado Springs -- The U.S. Field Hockey Association will select its 2002 Junior National Teams during its A Camp selection trials, Dec. 27-31 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

      Eighty-four of the nation's top collegiate and high school age athletes will compete for spots on the 2002 U.S. Under-23 team and U.S. Under-19 team during the week-long camp. Athletes earned invitations to A Camp through performances on U.S. Field Hockey programs such as 2001 junior teams, B Camp and the United Airlines Field Hockey League as well as selection during the National Hockey Festival.

      Athletes at A Camp range from 15-year old Kiersten Wood, a member of the 2001 U.S. Under-16 team, to 22-year old former Wake Forest University All-America selection Jenny Everett. Older athletes who can make the commitment to the demanding schedule of the U.S. National Team's residency program will have the opportunity to compete for spots on the National Team during an open trial scheduled for later in 2002. The U.S. National Team is currently training in its residency program at US Field Hockey's National Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va.

      The A Camp roster includes 58 collegiate athletes and 26 high school standouts. The University of North Carolina will send the most athletes to A Camp with 10, followed by the University of Iowa with seven and Princeton Univ. with five. NCAA Division I National Champion Univ. of Michigan and national runner-up Univ. of Maryland will each send three athletes to A Camp.

   Athletes earned invitations to A Camp through performances in U.S. Field Hockey programs such as 2001 junior teams, B Camp and the United Airlines Field Hockey League as well as selection during the National Hockey Festival.

Events on the 2002 competition calendar include the Pan America Hockey Federation Indoor Tournament for the Under-23 Team and the California and Montreal Cups for the Under-19 Team.  Members from both teams are expected to compete in the United Airlines Field Hockey League in June and July.
