US Field Hockey To Select 2001 National, Junior Teams at A-Camp

The U.S. Field Hockey Association will select its 2001 men’s and women’s National and Junior National teams during A-Camp, at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. and Moorpark College, Moorpark, Calif.

Coach Tracey Belbin and the U.S. women's team will conduct A-Camp over two weeks beginning Dec. 27-31 and continuing with a second week Jan. 3-7 in Chula Vista. The first week is expected to produce the selections for the 2001 U.S. Under-18 and Under-21 squads, while the second week will generate the 2001 U.S. National squad.

The women's National Team is expected to have a new look in 2001 with only nine members of the 2000 team returning to A Camp including 1996 Olympians Tracey Fuchs (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Katie Kauffman (Reading, Pa.) and Jill Reeve (Hoosick Falls, NY).  The team did not qualify for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

The U.S. women will face a full schedule in 2001 when the team enters a residency program in Virginia Beach, Va. on April 15. The team will live and train in its new home over the next four years.

On the turf, the U.S. women will travel to the first Americas Cup in Jamaica in March with the winner earning a spot in the 2002 International Hockey Federation (FIH) World Cup. The team will continue its quest for a World Cup berth at the World Cup Qualifying Tournament, Sept 18-30 in Abbeville, France before concluding its international schedule at the FIH Champions Challenge in December in New Delhi. The Champions Challenge features six of the world's top-ranked teams competing in a round-robin format. England, Germany, Korea, South Africa and host India will join the U.S. in the event's inaugural season.

The women’s Under-21 Team will have a major international tournament of its own when the team travels to the FIH Junior World Cup, May 14-26 in Buenos Aires. The team will compete in Pool A of the 16-team tournament with China, France and defending Junior World Cup Champion, The Netherlands.

The women’s Under-18 team is expected to compete at the California Cup Tournament in Moorpark, Calif. in May, before defending its title at the Montreal Cup in Canada in late June.

Men's Team to Prepare for World Cup Qualifier

On the men's side, A-Camp is scheduled for Dec. 27-31 at Moorpark, where head coach Shiv Jagday and U.S. Field Hockey selectors will choose the members of the 2001 National team. The U.S. men’s 2001 schedule includes competition in the World Cup Qualifying Tournament, July 17-29 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The top seven teams at the Qualifier will advance to the sport of field hockey's premier event, the FIH World Cup, March 4-16, 2002 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 2000 team earned a spot in the Qualifier with a fourth place finish at the inaugural Americas Cup competition last June. The U.S. men have appeared in the World Cup Qualifier only once in the six previous tournaments when the U.S. hosted the event in Madison, N.J. in 1989.
