Under-21 Field Hockey Team To Open Play in Pan Am Junior Championships The next wave of U.S. Field Hockey stars began its quest for
international honors this week, as the U.S. Under-21 Team opens play in the 4th Pan
American Junior Championships, April 13-23 in Bridgetown, Barbados. The
tournament, featuring teams from North, Central and South America and the Caribbean,
serves as a qualifying event for the 2001 FIH Junior World Cup in Buenos Aires. The
tournament champion is guaranteed a spot in the Junior World Cup, while additional
qualifying positions also may be available pending the outcome of the other continental
tournaments. Under head coach Tracey Griesbaum, the team is scheduled to open play April 14 against tournament host Barbados. The U. S. will compete in Pool A of the tournament with Barbados, Canada and Venezuela. Argentina, Bermuda, Chile, Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago round out the tournament field in Pool B. The teams will play a round-robin format in pool play before crossing over for classification rounds. Following
the Barbados game, the U.S. willl meet Canada on Sunday before taking on Venezuela on
Monday. The
U21 Women went 1-2-1 in their recent trip to Spain, beating the Spanish junior team 2-0,
and losing 5-1 and 3-1. The teams also played to a 0-0 draw.
