US Women's Netherlands Tour Roster New Look U.S. Developmental Team To
Tour Netherlands U.S. Field Hockey coach Tracey Belbin will unveil a new-look USA Team this month when the team travels to The Netherlands, May 16-28, for a series of games against top Dutch club teams. The U.S. developmental team will take on Division 3 club team QUI VIVE on May 18, Division II SCHC May 19, Division I PUSH May 20, Division I PINOKE May 23, Division II COOI SCHE May 24 and Division II BREDA May 25. The team may also schedule a game with Olympic Qualifying Tournament champion and Champions Trophy participant New Zealand during the tour. The Champions Trophy competition, featuring Argentina, Australia, Germany, The Netherlands, New Zealand and South Africa, is scheduled for May 26-June 4 in Amstelveen, The Netherlands. Apart from the familiar red, white and blue uniforms, the developmental team will have little resemblance to the U.S. squad that competed at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in March. Only nine members of the Qualifying Tournament team will make the trip to The Netherlands including Kate Barber (West Chester, Pa.), Chris DeBow (West Chester, Pa.), Kris Fillat (San Diego, Calif.), Tara Jelley (Greenfield, Mass.), Katie Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.), Nancy Pelligreen (St. Louis, Mo.), Jill Reeve (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) and goalkeepers Peggy Storrar (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Jana Withrow (Hockessin, Del.). The team placed sixth at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament and did not qualify for the Sydney Games. Pan American Games team member Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) is the only other player on the tour roster with senior national team experience after the recent retirement of some long-time U.S. standouts left some openings in the U.S. lineup. Belbin will fill the remaining spots on the roster with players making their first international appearances with the senior team including National Team members Coleen Kreiger (Trooper, Pa.) and Kristen McCann (Allentown, Pa.) and U.S. Under-21 team members Melanie Meerschwam (Amstelveen, Netherlands) and Abbey Woolley (Ocean City,
N.J.). Tagliente, Meerschwam and Woolley competed on the U.S. Under-21 Team that placed second at last month's
Pan Am Junior Championships and earned a spot in the 2001 Junior World Cup. Jackie Carl (Brewster, N.Y.), a first team All-America selection at Northeastern, and Natalie Dawson (Berlin, N.J.), a junior at the University of Iowa, were called up to the National Team for the tour after impressing Belbin at last January's National Team trials.
