2000 Men's Under-16 Team Selected

U16 Roster

The newly named U.S. Field Hockey Men's Under-16 squad may be the Association's youngest group, but the team is already deep with experience.

Nine athletes earned repeat selections to the 16-member squad -- including five members who earned their third selections to the three-year-old team -- following tryouts in Moorpark, Calif. and Hershey, Pa.

Returning to the squad for the third year, Austin Hargett (Ventura, Calif.), Patrick Harris (Moorpark, Calif.), Sean Harris (Moorpark, Calif.), Eric Hodgdon (Somers Point, N.J.) and Jeb Saez (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) were charter members of the team when the USFHA established the Under-16 men's program in 1998. Neil Bishnoi (Ventura, Calif), Adam Dorn (Ventura, Calif.), Danny Jordan (Camarillo, Calif.) and Brandon Sherman (Moorpark, Calif.) earned their second selections to the team.

The newest members of the squad include Chris Fuller (Ventura, Calif.), Gurpal Kundi (Glendora, Calif.), Daniel Mele (Olney, Md.), Navtej Sadhal (Yorba Linda, Calif.), Eric Schanafelt (Georgetown, Calif.), Ryan Sherburne (Greenfield, Mass.) and 12-year-old goalkeeper Andrew Zayac (Columbia, Md.).

Patrick Harris will serve double duty with the U.S. teams after earning an appointment to the U.S. National Team. Harris’ brother, 13-year-old Sean, also earned a spot on the squad for the third straight year.

The team includes two additional sibling connections. Schanafelt is the brother of U.S. National Team selection and 1999 Pan American Games team member Mike Schanafelt while Jordan is the brother of Under-16 alternate Richard Jordan.

The squad's six alternates include Richard Jordan, Jonathon Ginolfi, Michael Gudmundson, David Maltese and 1999 team members Jaspal Grewall and Michael Lipka.

The Under-16 team represents the first step in an athlete’s elite-team development process and serves to introduce young players to international competition while preparing athletes for future National Team consideration. Directed by U.S. Men’s National Coach Shiv Jagday and coached by University of California-Berkeley head coach Shellie Onstead, the team will tour the Netherlands in the spring with a series of games in Amsterdam from April 18-24. The team placed fourth at the tournament last year with a 4-3-3 record.

In her second season as head coach of the Under-16 Team, Onstead earned U.S. Field Hockey Developmental Coach of the Year honors in 1999 for her work with the young team.

The team will also compete in the U.S. Field Hockey's new, five-team men's California League, March 2-5 in Berkeley, Calif.,  June 1-4 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, and Aug. 17-20 at the Moorpark, Calif. Pat Harris will compete with under-21 members of the U.S. National Team as a member of the  USAExplosion, while the remainder of the team will play with senior members of the National Team for coach Onstead and the USA Impact.

The United States Field Hockey Association is the national governing body for women’s and men’s field hockey in the United States and is responsible for the training and preparation of teams to participate in international competitions such as the Olympic Games and Pan American Games as well as for the promotion and development of the sport throughout the United States.
