U21 Field Hockey Men to Compete at Pan Am Junior Championships

The U.S. Field Hockey Under-21 men's team will try to secure a spot in the 2001 Junior World Cup when the team competes in the Pan American Junior Championships, Oct. 11-21, in Santiago, Chile.

The winner of the tournament earns an automatic bid to the 2001 Junior World Cup in Hobart, Australia, while the next three top teams remain in the running for an FIH invitation to the tournament.

"I have said all along we have the talent to compete with anyone," said U.S. coach Shiv Jagday. "The key to our success continues to be our ability to play with confidence in big game situations."

Members of the young U.S. team earned a taste of  international competition at last summer's Americas Cup competition in Havana and at the Canadian National Championships in Vancouver. The U.S. placed 5th at the Americas Cup and 9th at the Canadian Championships.

     Members of the 2000 U.S. team include Leo Amar, Rinku Bhamber, Kyle Bratner, Pat Cota, Kieran Dunning, Logan Hargett, Pat Harris, Daraspreet Kainth, Koijan Kainth, Jarred Martin, Bryan Rauschenberger, Todd Robinson, Jeb Saez, Daljett Sagoo, Mike Schanafelt and Ryan Vickers.

The U.S. team last qualified for the Junior World Cup in 1989 where the team placed 11th of 12 teams at Ipoh, Malaysia.

Teams already earning spots int he 16-team Junior World Cup include host Australia, European qualifiers Spain, Germany, Netherlands, England, Scotland and Asian qualifiers Korea, India, Malaysia and Japan. Winners of the Oceania and African qualifiers will also earn automatic spots in the Junior World Cup, with the remaining teams selected by the FIH.
